A theatrical mash-up of two Singaporean narratives — each dealing with different aspects of the funerary experience in the city. In the semi-autobiographical, aWake, a young Singaporean-Chinese girl grapples with the strange Taoist rituals at her late great-grandmother’s funeral wake. In an adaptation of The Coffin is Too Big for the Hole, an insomniac white-collar worker can’t forget about his struggle with bureaucracy to get his grandfather’s oversized coffin buried. Lighting, sound, smells and projections are used to recreate a sense of everyday Singapore and the unique sensorial experience of Taoist funerals.
“Platform 65 really immerse their audience in Singaporean culture through their use of multimedia: projections are cast across the walls giving a real flavour of what life is like in HBD flats (the places 85% of Singaporeans live)”
